I recently got the opportunity to travel to Washington DC to cover the meeting between the New Zealand Foreign Minister and the US Secretary of State. Inside the opulent offices of America's top diplomat, I pondered whether a country like New Zealand can thrive in the middle of a tug-of-war between the US and China.

New Zealand needs China for trade, it also needs the US for security. Can it have both?
